Royal snub: Meghan and Harry avoid awkward meeting with Trump at Queen’s NATO reception

The Queen hosted a gala banquet for NATO and world leaders to mark the 70th anniversary of the military alliance. Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, joined Her Majesty in receiving the guests as they arrived at Buckingham Palace. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, was also present to chat and mingle with dignitaries.

However, conspicuous by their absence were Meghan and Harry.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had a good excuse though for not attending the glittering event.

Since the middle of November the royal couple have embarked on a six week break to spend some quality time with their son Archie.

A palace source told People earlier in November: “The Duke and Duchess have a full schedule of engagements and commitments until mid-November, after which they will be taking some much-needed family time.”

This is the second time that Meghan has gotten out of a meeting with Trump.

Trump visited the UK in June on a state visit and attended a Buckingham Palace banquet as part of his tour.

Meghan missed the official engagement because she was still recuperating from having given birth to Archie.

There is clearly no love lost between the Duchess and the US President, with their dislike for one another going back a long way.

The 38-year-old Duchess publicly supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 US Presidential elections and labelled Trump as “divisive” and “misogynistic”.

Speaking on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Meghan said:“Of course Trump is divisive – think about female voters alone.

“I think it was in 2012, the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points.

“That’s a huge number and as misogynistic as Trump is, and so vocal about it, that’s a huge chunk of it.”

Trump branded the Duchess as “nasty”, when he was reminded of her words in an interview with The Sun.

As recently as October, the US President also criticised Meghan for not being tough enough and taking things too personally.

Commenting on the Duchess’ remarks in the ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, Trump told LBC presenter Nigel Farage that he thought she was taking criticism from the press too seriously.

He said: “Well I’ve been watching her interviews and I’ve seen it and she’s taken it very personally.

“I guess she had to be a little bit different than that, but she takes it very, very personally and I can understand it.

“But I don’t know her.”

Melania Trump arrived at the Buckingham palace reception wearing a stunning yellow cape coat from Maison Valentino’s A/W 2019 collection.

Her husband chose more formal affair, sporting a dark business suit with a royal-blue tie.

Earlier on Tuesday the Trumps joined Charles and Camilla at Clarence House for tea.
