Royal wedding: How Prince Harry broke with tradition during wedding to Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex married at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor in 2018, and have since welcomed their baby son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Although in many ways their wedding followed the standards expected of a royal wedding, Prince Harry decided on a slightly more personal addition to be made to his wedding ceremony.

Technically, when it comes to engagement and wedding rings in the British Royal Family, there are no official traditions in place.

Female Royal Family members have sported all kinds of different engagement rings over the years, with no two identical to each other.

But as for the wedding bands of royal grooms, many royal men choose not to wear a wedding ring at all.

Upon marrying Queen Elizabeth II in 1947, Prince Philip decided not to wear a wedding ring.

And for his wedding to Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William also decided to forego a wedding band.

Upon his marriage last year to Meghan Markle, Harry decided he would wear a wedding ring.

And the particular ring Harry chose also veered away from the traditional styles of royal jewellery.

Prince Harry’s choice of metal was unprecedented, with his ring comprising of textured platinum.

Royal wedding rings are often gifted by the Queen, who has a personal collection of Welsh gold from the Clogau St. David Gold Mine in Wales.

For the occasion, the Queen gifted Harry’s wife Meghan with a traditional wedding ring made of Welsh gold.

Although many royal men have chosen not to wear a wedding ring, Harry is not the first to have decided against the precedent.

Perhaps even more unique than Harry’s wedding ring is the ring of Harry’s father, Prince Charles.

Like Harry, Prince Charles chooses to wear a wedding ring, but in his own unique way.

While married to Princess Diana, Prince Charles chose to wear a wedding ring.

And now, Charles wears his ring from his marriage to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, on his pinky finger.

On the same finger, Charles also wears his signature signet ring.
