The Duke of York, 61, is being sued by Virginia Roberts Giuffre for allegedly sexually assaulting her 20 years ago when she was 17. The Queen’s son has vigorously denied the allegations by Ms Giuffre, which include that she was trafficked to the Prince by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Today, Andrew’s legal team has called on a US judge to have the civil lawsuit against the royal dismissed without trial.

Judge Lewis Kaplan has listened to arguments by Andrew’s lawyers at a hearing in New York and also heard from legal representatives for Ms Giuffre.

Amid the sexual assault allegations made against Andrew, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson has recently shown her support for her former husband.

The couple, who divorced in 1996 and have two children together, have remained good friends.

The Duchess of York spoke of her support for Andrew in an interview on Italian chat show Porta a Porta.

Speaking last month, she said: “I completely stand by Andrew 100 percent.

“He is such a kind, great man, he is a brilliant father and now a fantastic grandfather.

“I feel very strongly that in this day and age that we must stand by our hearts, what we think is right with integrity and honour and loyalty.”

Fergie appeared on the show to plug her debut romantic novel with Mills & Boon, ‘Her Heart for a Compass’.

However, despite wanting to promote her latest project, interviewer Bruno Vespa pressed the Duchess for details of her relationship with Andrew and other royals.

Fergie was asked what the happiest time in her life was.

She replied: “July 3, 1986, when I married the best man in the world.

“I was the luckiest girl in the world.

“It was truly a fairytale because I was marrying a prince.

“First of all, I was marrying a man, then I was marrying a naval officer, and then I was marrying a prince.

“And he was very good looking, a handsome prince from all the fairytales, he even had the sword.”

While Fergie has made her love and support for Andrew clear, the Duke’s future remains uncertain.

Today’s hearing comes after a document containing details of $500,000 (£371,000) settlement paid by Epstein to Ms Roberts was made public for the first time on Monday.

Under the agreement, published by a New York court, Ms Roberts agreed to end her claim against Epstein.

The previously confidential document also shows that she agreed not to sue any other “potential defendant”.

Andrew’s lawyers claimed the agreement, which does not name the Prince, means she cannot sue him.

However, her own legal team has argued that the Duke could not have been a potential defendant in the case against Epstein, and that Andrew can therefore be subject to legal action now.

After the hour-long hearing concluded, Judge Kaplan said that a decision on whether the civil lawsuit against Andrew can be thrown out will be made “pretty soon”.
