Scientists make huge breakthrough in nuclear fusion power

Scientists have achieved a long-sought breakthrough towards nuclear fusion – a reaction that replicates what makes stars shine.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California confirmed today that researchers have achieved a net energy gain for the first time.

This was the first fusion reaction in a laboratory setting that produced more energy than it took to start the reaction.

Since the 1950s, scientists have spoken of nuclear fusion as an almost fabled solution to the world’s energy crisis.
