Serena Williams has opened up about how “tired” she is seeing all the “negativity” surrounding Meghan Markle. The tennis star spoke about the Duchess of Sussex, who she has been friends with since 2014, in a new interview with high-end international shoe brand, Stuart Weitzman. The company’s Chief Marketing Officer Behnaz Ghahramani asked Ms Williams about the Twitter statement she put up in support of the royal following the broadcast of her Oprah Winfrey interview.
The sports champion said: “I just think that [Meghan] is really one of the strongest people I know.
“I don’t know anyone else that could handle everything on such a global scale the way that she’s had to handle things that are just untrue.
“Minute after minute, not even day after day, but just minute after minute.
“Just another untrue allegation being thrown at her.”
She added: “So I think it was important for me to say something because I’m tired of sitting back and seeing all this negativity that’s just not true.”
Ms Ghahramani agreed: “[Meghan’s] strength and courage is such an inspiration.
“I think the importance of women supporting women and standing by each other is also quite important.
“So I really appreciated your statement and also just the friendship that you both share.”
Meghan Markle: Serena Williams refuses to comment on royals
Serena has been part of many major moments in Meghan’s life, both before and after the entrance into the Royal Family.
Ms Williams attended the Sussexes’ wedding ceremony in 2018 with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.
She was also the one responsible for organising the Duchess’ New York baby shower in 2019.

After the Oprah interview aired in the US, Serena posted to Twitter, writing: “Meghan Markle, my selfless friend, lives her life – and leads by example – with empathy and compassion.
“She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced.
“I know firsthand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of colour to minimise us, to break us down and demonise us.
“We must recognize our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health consequences of systemic oppression and victimization are devastating, isolating, and all too often lethal.
“I want Meghan’s daughter, my daughter, and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect. Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against no such things, there is no law.”
