Several children injured after roof is ripped off bus in crash with bridge

A number of children have been rushed to hospital after a school double-decker bus hit a bridge and caused the roof to completely rip off.

The bus collided with a railway bridge in Winchester, Hampshire, on Thursday shortly before 8.15am.

Some of the pupils suffered serious injuries in the incident in WellHouse Lane, said police. However, none have sustained life-threatening injuries.

The children all attend Henry Beaufort School in Harestock.

Winchester City Councillor Jane Rutter said on Twitter: ‘Just had a report that a double decker bus has managed to lodge itself under the railway bridge in Wellhouse Lane, Headbourne Worthy. Emergency services have been called. Please avoid if possible.’

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Crews from Winchester, Eastleigh, Andover, Redbridge and Basingstoke were mobilised at 08:12 this morning to Well House Lane in Winchester.’

South Central Ambulance Service said it attended the scene along with Hampshire Police – who are leading enquiries into the incident – along with Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service and Network Rail.

WellHouse Lane has been closed in both directions following the crash.
