Emergency services shut the southbound carriageway from junction 7 for Harlow, Essex, to junction 6 for the M25 near Epping. Emergency services were called to reports of a car fire near the M25 link this afternoon.
The road was closed for around one hour and traffic remains slow on the M11 from junction 8 for Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, and the London Stansted link.
Although a diversion has not been formally put in place, some drivers left the M11 at junction 7 and used local roads through Epping to either join the M25 and resume their journey or go through Loughton, Essex, and rejoin M11 at junction 5.
But these were congested as a result, Essex Live reports.
Northbound traffic on the M11 was slow but moving, largely due to onlookers.
It was congested from the M25 link and on the M25 in both directions on approach to its junction 27.
A photo shared on Twitter by Essex Roads Policing shows the wreckage of the white car involved in the fire.
It is unclear if anyone was hurt in the blaze.
