Sky’s Burley rages at Labour MP’s plan to let ’70k Europeans’ into UK in COVID-19 lockdown

The Sky News host was alarmed by Luke Pollard’s demand to allow up to 70,000 food pickers into the UK while Britain is under lockdown. Ms Burley grilled the Labour MP on his calls to relax the borders. Mr Pollard argued it was necessary for the UK to have enough fresh fruit and vegetables in the coming months.

The Shadow Environment Secretary said: “The bulk of our seasonal workers that the UK uses at the moment come from Bulgaria and Romania.

“We know that there is a real shortage of those workers already.

“This is one of the reasons we need the Government to look at this.”

The Sky News host replied: “So you do want us to relax our borders to allow these people in?”

Mr Pollard said: “Well, it depends on the definition of relaxing the borders.”

Ms Burley asked: “Well what definition would you use?

“You want 70,000 people from Europe to come to the United Kingdom when actually the people of the United Kingdom are in lockdown because they are terrified about COVID-19.

“Is that what you are saying?”

The Labour MP responded: “What I want is to make sure we have enough people in our fields to pick the fruit and vegetables we will need in a few months’ time.”
