Police said the incident took place as the Co-op on Dudlow Green Road in Appleton was closing on Monday. Two men approached two members of staff at around 10.20pm as they were shutting the store.

The men, who were wearing face coverings and armed with a hammer and a large knife, forced the staff back into the shop and demanded cash and cigarettes before fleeing the scene.

Cheshire Police is urging anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

Detective Constable Chris Murphy, from Warrington CID, said: “The men, both wearing face coverings, were heavily armed and intent on stealing money and cigarettes from the store.

“While the investigation is ongoing and I am encouraging anyone who has information and has not yet spoken to an officer to get in touch.

“I would also ask residents to check CCTV or dash cam footage between 10pm and 10.30pm on the night the robbery occurred and to contact us if it reveals anything that could assist with the investigation.”
