The survey for the Daily Express newspaper found 29 percent are against minor royals like Sophie taking on duties now Prince Andrew has stepped down. It comes after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry also quit for a new life in Canada.
But 26 percent of people agreed that Prince Edward’s wife and other minor royals including Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie should step up.
Thirty percent neither agreed nor disagreed, and 14 percent replied that they didn’t know.
It follows speculation over Sophie’s role, with royal expert Phil Dampier saying she “would be perfect to take up some of the slack”.
The poll also found that 47 percent of people think the monarchy should be reduced in size, compared to 15 percent who disagree.
And some 61 percent agree that the royals are good for the UK, with just 15 percent saying they are not.
Speculation has been high over whether Sophie could take on a more prominent role in the royal family following the departures of the Duke of York and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Speaking earlier this week, Mr Dampier told the Daily Mail: “It’s been said for a long time that Prince Charles wants a slimmed down monarchy when he becomes king – but I’m not sure they meant this slim!”
He warned the royal family is becoming “seriously understaffed” after losing Meghan, Harry and Andrew.
The royal author added: “Prince Philip is retired at 98, the Queen is nearly 94 and Charles and Camilla are in their 70s.
“Princess Anne is 70 this year and the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra are in their 80s. So who is going to take over the hundreds of patronages?”

Mr Dampier said that Sophie has “become a star in her own right”.
He continued: “She is very close to Her Majesty and is a favourite of hers.
“Recently she has been on several overseas trips and done fantastically well.
“Now that her children are a bit older I think there could be a great role for her to play. She is 55 today and she is very fit and full of energy.
“I think she wants to do more and would happily step up to the plate and take over more duties if asked.
“Charles has to realise that you can slim down too much and they are running out of royals to do the nitty gritty work.
“Sophie would be perfect to take up some of the slack and I think she has the potential to be a royal superstar given the chance.
“If it was Sophie’s choice I think she would grab it with both hands.”
Sophie and the Earl of Wessex stepped out with Prince William, Kate and other royals for a glittering reception at Buckingham Palace on Monday to mark the UK-Africa Investment Summit.
ComRes polled 2,039 British adults between January 22 and 23 for the Daily Express.
