Sophie Wessex has “stepped up to the plate,” according to Charlie Rae, former royal editor at The Sun. He told talkRADIO that Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, had both taken on duties that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had left behind. Mr Rae noted that Sophie had particularly kindled a strong personal relationship with the Queen herself and has spent more time with Her Majestry in the wake of her husband Prince Philip’s passing.

This comes as both Sophie and Edward made a rare intervention into the drama surrounding Meghan Markle and Prince Harry with a subtle dig at their close friend and US chat host Oprah Winfrey.

The royal couple gave their first major interview together to the Telegraph Magazine where they addressed Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah which was aired in March.

In response, the Countess questioned if the British public even knew who the American host was.

When the subject of the interview was raised, the Earl of Wessex quipped “Oprah who?”

Speaking from their Bagshot House in Surrey, a chuckling Sophie added: “Yes, what interview?

“You know, if you’re not into chat shows, there’s no reason why you should know who she is. Certainly not in this country, anyway.”

TalkRADIO host Kevin O’Sullivan remarked on this response: “This is a subject that the royals are not that keen on touching, is it?”

Mr Rae said: “It’s your typical Prince Edward. He tries this sort of fake humour to bat it away.

“They are clearly stepping up to the plate and will take on quite a few of the duties that Harry and Meghan are no longer doing.

“So they are helping out. They have become reformed characters. Both of them had a chequered past.”

Mr O’Sullivan noted: “Edward and Sophie do seem to have been rehabilitated in the public’s mind.

“They are doing quite a good job. They are coming across quite well aren’t they?”

Mr Rae explained: “They are. If you look at off-duty events, you will see Edward and Sophie more and more with the Queen, which is nice to see

“Sophie is a lovely woman. She is doing very, very well.”

During the Telegraph Magazine interview, the 56-year-old also revealed she had a “lengthy chat” with Harry after Prince Philip’s funeral in April.

The Countess of Wessex added the royals are “still a family no matter what happens”.
