Surge testing in Surrey, Norfolk and Southampton as South African strain found

Emergency coronavirus surge testing will be rolled out in Surrey, Norfolk and Southampton in a bid to stamp out the mutant South African Covid strain.

These measures will also be extended in Manchester, where new cases of the variant have also been identified.

Additional testing and genomic sequencing will deployed in the IP22 postcode of Norfolk, SO15 in Southampton and areas of Woking covered by the GU22 postcode.

Manchester’s testing will be expanded to cover areas within the M40 and M9 postcodes.

People living within the targeted areas are strongly encouraged to take a Covid-19 test this week, whether they are showing symptoms or not.

Those with symptoms should book a test in the usual way while others should visit their council website.
