Cases of the South African Covid variant have been detected in several London boroughs in recent days. In the boroughs in Lambeth, Wandsworth and Southwark, additional surge testing for the South African variant has already been deployed. Another postcode area, N3, was added to the surge testing list today (Wednesday, April 14).
On Wednesday, people living in an area of Barnet were urged to get a test after a case of the South African variant of coronavirus was detected.
Teams of officials will go door-to-door in areas under the N3 postcode to deliver PCR test kits.
In addition, a mobile testing unit will be set up in the car park of Finchley Central Station.
A statement on the council’s website said: “The South African variant of Covid-19 has been found in Barnet.
“From Thursday 15 April we will start testing people for this variant in specific postcode areas affected in N3 or those who shop on the local high street.”
Earlier this week, Dr Kevin Fenton, Regional Director, PHE London and Regional Director of Public Health, NHS London, urged people in Lambeth, Wandsworth and Southwark to take part in the surge testing being rolled out.
Dr Fenton said: “The cluster of cases in parts of South London – predominantly the Lambeth and Wandsworth areas but also in Southwark – of the variant first identified in South Africa is significant.
“It’s really important people in the local area play their part in stopping any further spread within the local community.
“PCR testing is now available for all and I would strongly encourage everyone in Southwark who is invited to take part to get tested, even if they don’t have any symptoms of coronavirus.
“Around 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 don’t show any symptoms. By taking part you can protect yourselves and your loved ones and help us identify any possible new cases that would otherwise be missed, preventing further transmission and saving lives.”
Full list of surge testing areas:
- Southwark (targeted area within SE16)
- Barnet (N3 postcode)
- Harrow (specific areas within the HA2 postcode)
- Bolton (area of Wingates Industrial Estate within the BL5 postcode)
