Taoiseach expected to dissolve Dáil today and call General Election 2020

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is expected to dissolve the Dáil today after briefing his Cabinet ministers and call a general election for February 7th.

Mr Varadkar is expected to travel to Áras an Uachtaráin later today and seek the permission of President Michael D Higgins to end the 32nd Dail and trigger General Election 2020.

Senior sources in Government indicated the Taoiseach was preparing to call the general election today with most ministers still believing February 7th will be polling day.

However, Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone said before the Cabinet meeting that she believed the election would be on February 14, St Valentines’ Day.

Health Minister Simon Harris said anyone who claims to know when the election date would be “bluffing”.

Mr Varadkar met his ministers this morning to brief them on his plans for an election date.

One minister attending the meeting said their “gut” was telling them the election would be called today.

Another government source said they believed the election would be called today.
