A teenage girl who died after being pulled from the sea in in Clacton, Essex, has been named

Malika Shamas, 14, from Luton, died in hospital after she and two relatives were recovered from the water close to Clacton Pier at around 1.40pm yesterday.

An 18-year-old man remains in hospital in a critical condition, while a 15-year-old girl is in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Witnesses saw paramedics performing CPR as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

It comes one year after the death of Ben Quartermaine, 15, whose body was found on a beach in Clacton-on-Sea after disappearing in water close to the pier.

His mum and stepdad Vicky and Colin Gentry called for better warning signs and education for ‘all year groups in all schools, whether coastal or not’.

Essex Police’s Acting Detective Superintendent Paul Wells said officers believe the three teenagers got into difficulty while out at sea.

He added: ‘We are continuing to support the family at this unimaginably difficult time and are working closely with our partners.

‘We would like to thank members of the public and our emergency service colleagues who responded really quickly and worked incredibly hard to help the teenagers.

‘We would also like to thank members of the public who showed respect to the casualties and their families and who gave the emergency services space to work.

‘We thank you for your support as we work to establish what happened.’

HM Coastguard and the RNLI were also involved in the response.
