Commenting on the notion that Britain has become more independent and in a position to exercise its sovereign powers, readers slammed the French President and his policies towards the fishing wars. Launching the attack against Mr Macron, NotinEU2 said: “The threats will strengthen the Brexit resolve.”

BobPage said: “Lord Frost’s comments are measured, reasonable and proportionate. France has made a huge mistake by breaking the TCA, the EU already has a huge trust problem and breaking international law will not help that.”

Adding to the conversation, TheSkipper said: “It causes more damage to leave the EU than to stay in’? Well that’s debatable as Poland, Spain, Portugal and Italy are finding out. It is probable that it is financially and employment wise more damaging to be in than out.”

Razachas said that Britain would stand up to pressure: “We will never stop reacting to bully boy tactics as history shows you.”

Tamthescot also agreed: “Got to stand up to bullies, go get them Boris!”

Slamming the EU as an institution, AlanWebster said: “We thought that it was just a policy of the Mafia, to punish anybody who tried to leave the organisation! Wake up Remoaners, see the EU for what it is. Corrupt and undemocratic!”

Questioning whether the EU shares the same ideas as Mr Macron and whether they are truly united on the issue, Spooks said: “The rest of the EU countries all being very quiet, absolutely no support for Macaroni, they have probably read the agreement the EU signed !”

Taking the issue of the fishing war further, NobbyN said: “If the French Play tough, we must play tougher and ban all French Trawlers from British Fishing Waters.”

With the UK now emerging as a world trading power as demonstrated in the number of trade deals signed since Brexit, one reader blamed France and the EU for Britain’s success.

SuperTrump said: “Sir Frost is correct in his assumptions, it is time to end a huge amount of trading with the EU States with some exceptions. The new trade deals that we have signed need to be expedited and factored into our economy. The EU and France have bought this on themselves.”

Taking it further, SuperTrump also commented on the prospect of a UK-US trade deal by adding, “Biden will not be around much longer which will leave us free to trade with a more normal US. This opens massive opportunities for cars and other goods.”

And pointing out the irony in Jean Castex’s claim that leaving the EU is more damaging, one reader concluded by reminding the French of their options.

“He says it’s more damaging to leave the EU than (it is damaging) to stay in,” said ForsdykeMontague.

He continued: “So the French are saying the EU is damaging but it’s even more damaging to leave…. Great choice”
