Onlookers called emergency services at around 8.48pm on Tuesday night at an Asda in Aintree, Liverpool. Ambulances were on the scene in nine minutes, and the girl was rushed 10 miles away to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Unfortunately, at the children’s hospital, the three-year-old was pronounced dead.

A Merseyside police spokesperson said: “The child was taken to hospital but sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

“The family are being supported by officers at this sad time.

“The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and enquiries are ongoing.

“A file is in the process of being prepared for the coroner.”

A source close to the incident said to the girl choked on the rubber end of her own jacket’s zip.

An Asda spokesperson said: “We are shocked and saddened by this incident and send our deepest condolences to the little girl’s family.

“We are grateful to colleagues who provided immediate assistance in store and will do whatever we can to support them.”

As the death is being treated as non-suspicious, Merseyside Police said they cannot provide further details on her death.

One unnamed Asda worker told The Sun staff at the store are “devastated”.

They added to the outlet: “It’s just so sad for her parents.

“How do you get over something like that.”

Another worker said staff were “still in shock” after hearing about the girl’s death.
