Teenage activist Greta Thunberg has had to appeal for help to attend the UN global climate in Madrid next month.
The event has been moved after Chile pulled out as host. Chilean President Sebastián Piñera announced he needed to focus on restoring security following weeks of protests in which at least a dozen people have died.
Ms Thunberg (16) made a high-profile crossing from the UK to New York on a racing yacht earlier this year and planned to travel overland to Santiago. She refuses to fly because of aviation’s big carbon footprint.
After the move to Madrid was confirmed by UN climate chief Patricia Espinosa, the Swedish teenager – whose climate protests have helped inspire hundreds of thousands of people to take to the streets demanding greater efforts from world leaders – appealed for help in her efforts to attend the gathering.
“It turns out I’ve travelled half around the world, the wrong way,” she tweeted.
“Now I need to find a way to cross the Atlantic in November.
“If anyone could help me find transport I would be so grateful.”
The event will be held in the Spanish capital from December 2-13.
