Tragedy as boy dies after being hit by car when riding his bike

A 13-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a car when riding his bicycle.

Jake Day was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries and died in his sleep due to complications on the weekend.

The youngster was hit by a blue Mini Cooper saloon in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, on Thursday February 23. 

His school, Co-op Academy, released a statement to all parents and carers yesterday, reports Yorkshire Live.

“As an academy, we are sad to have to share the devastating news that a brother of a child in our school has died over the weekend,” the statement read.

“Unfortunately, Jake Day, brother to Katie-Louise Day, sadly passed away in his sleep due to complications over the weekend.

“Jake was a pupil at our academy and with the support from Year 6 pupils and staff, we will be contributing with messages of support in a sympathy card to send to Katie-Louise and her family. Year 6 have been informed and supported with this news today as a request by the family. Our thoughts are with Jake’s family at this difficult time and all that knew him.”

Following the collision, West Yorkshire Police made an appeal for any information from witnesses or those who have footage and can assist in the investigation. People were being asked to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 101 or get in touch via the 101LiveChat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website.

In a statement at the time, West Yorkshire Police said: “Police are appealing for information following a serious road traffic collision in Kirklees yesterday (Thursday).

“At 1.25pm, police received a report of a collision involving a blue Mini Cooper saloon and a boy on a pedal cycle at the junction of Leeds Road and Muffit Lane, Heckmondwike.

“Emergency services attended and the 13-year-old was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. He remains in hospital today where his condition is said to be critical. The driver of the Mini has been spoken to.”
