A further 207 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus as of Wednesday, the Government said.

The daily figure is the highest since March 9 when 231 deaths were reported.

It takes the UK total to 132,742.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 157,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Meanwhile, there have been a further 35,693 confirmed cases, according to the Government’s latest figures.

It comes after a bank holiday weekend when there is usually a lag in reporting deaths and cases.

On vaccinations, Government data up to August 31 shows that of the 90,994,627 Covid jabs given in the UK, 48,086,605 were first doses, a rise of 38,596 on the previous day.

Some 42,908,022 were second doses, an increase of 117,437.
