In recent days coronavirus cases in the UK have been increasing. As of last Friday, the UK reported an R number of 1.0 to 1.2 for the first time since March. From today (Monday, September 14) new lockdown rules have been introduced across the UK, but according to reports the Government are considering further measures to stop the spread of COVID-19.

On Sunday, September 13, 3,330 new cases of coronavirus were reported in the UK.

And in light of increasing coronavirus cases, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the ‘rule of six’ will begin from this week.

Under the new rules, social gatherings of more than six people are now banned across England.

Experts believe urgent action is needed to prevent a second wave of coronavirus infections.

Peter Openshaw, professor of experimental medicine at Imperial College London, said a “trickle” of cases can turn into a “cascade”.

Speaking about the rise in cases on Sky’s Ridge On Sunday, Prof Openshaw said: “I think everyone is in agreement that we really need to act very quickly now in order to prevent this from growing exponentially.

“I think that’s the main point is that we must act fast because it’s so much harder to get this sort of thing under control if you delay.

“Even a few days is potentially going to be quite dangerous now at this particular moment.”

Could Britain be facing an 11pm curfew?

Younger people are currently reporting higher rates of COVID-19 infection than other groups, which some have attributed to social gatherings and flouting of social distancing rules.

The PM is believed to be considering introducing a 10pm or 11pm curfew on restaurants, bars and pubs if local measures to control the virus prove ineffective, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

A source told the publication the introduction of a curfew is the “logical next step”.

The move stems from a concern that social distancing measures are not followed as effectively when alcohol is consumed.

In Bolton where cases of coronavirus have risen dramatically in recent weeks, curfews have already been introduced in bars to limit social interactions.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the Government will introduce these measures across England.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland told Sky’s Sophy Ridge On Sunday he would not “speculate” on what measures may be brought in to tackle COVID-19 in the future.

He said: “I think that as you’ve seen we’ve been very prepared to move quickly where necessary and where the evidence points us.

“I think there’s an issue about social occasions and social events and particularly young people getting together and enjoying themselves sometimes a bit too much and forgetting the importance of the rules.

“I think it would be idle of me to speculate as to what measures we might have to bring in as we approach the winter.”
