The Chancellor finally revealed what will be replacing the furlough scheme – the new Job Support Scheme. Starting on November 1, the six-month scheme will see the Government pay part of staff’s wages if they are now working reduced hours because of the pandemic. the proposals are aimed at helping companies keep their staff on the payroll, meaning they have their hours reduced rather than being made redundant.

The Chancellor announced the new measures as experts warned Britain could see a “tsunami” of job losses this winter.

The scheme has been announced as the current furlough scheme comes to an end, while some business tougher restrictions are introduced to combat coronavirus.

However, the Chancellor said the scheme will only support ‘viable jobs’. So what does this mean?

What does ‘viable’ mean?

Viable means “capable of working successfully; feasible”.

So in the current climate, a viable job is one which is not at risk of redundancy.

Speaking at the Downing Street press conference, Mr Sunak said: “It’s not for me to sit here and make pronouncements upon exactly what job is viable or not but what we do need to do is evolve our support now that we’re through the acute phase of the crisis.”

So what does it mean in terms of your job? Well, ITV”s Robert Peston explains.

He said: “Businesses facing depressed revenues can choose to keep people on [their] books so long as they work a third of [their] normal hours, as alternative to redundancy.”

The Political Editor said the scheme “will help businesses that have reduced revenues”, but admitted: “Though it won’t help those whose revenues have utterly collapsed”.
