Last month, the Duchess of Sussex made a huge political move with a letter to the US Congress. In her letter, Meghan called on Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Leader Charles Schumer for paid leave for parents.
Now, according to Omid Scobie, the paid leave for all movement has been brought back in the Build Back Better Act.
He tweeted: “Big news for the #PaidLeaveForAll movement in the US, which is now back in the #BuildBackBetter Act thanks to orgs such as @PaidLeaveforAll, @FmlyValuesWork, @WorkFamilyCA and efforts from activists such as Duchess Meghan (who wrote a powerful letter to Congress two weeks ago).”
The official Twitter account for Ways and Means Committee – senior committee with jurisdiction over health care, trade, taxes, and Social Security – issued a statement from their chairman.
Chairman Richard E Neal said: “For far too long, American workers have had to make the impossible choice between providing for their families and caring for them.
“Now, because of the leadership and tireless advocacy of the people’s House.”
In her plea for paid leave, Meghan said it should be a “national right” like many other countries.
She said: “Paid leave should be a national right, rather than a patchwork option limited to those whose employers have policies in place, or those who live in one of the few states where a leave program exists.
“If we’re going to create a new era of family first policies, let’s make sure that includes a strong paid leave program for every American that’s guaranteed, accessible, and encouraged without stigma or penalty.
“I know how politically charged things can—and have—become.
“But this isn’t about Right or Left, it’s about right or wrong.
“This is about putting families above politics.
“And for a refreshing change, it’s something we all seem to agree on.
“At a point when everything feels so divisive, let this be a shared goal that unites us.”
It comes as traditionally members of the Royal Family are politically neutral and do not provide a public opinion on political matters.
Since stepping down from royal duties in 2020, Meghan and Harry also stepped into the realm of politics and urged Americans to vote in the US presidential elections last November.
This comes just months after Harry and Meghan were revealed to be taking five months leave following the birth of their daughter, Lilibet Diana.
