Wife-to-be 'ran off with fiance's bags and £5,000 at the airport'

A would-be bride ran off with her husband to be’s luggage and thousands in cash at an airport, it has been claimed.

The couple, said to be in their 40s, got engaged a day before the incident following a whirlwind romance, The Sun reported.

It said the pair were set to fly to Rome from Heathrow Airport for the wedding earlier this week, but the man’s fiancé disappeared while he went for a comfort break.

The ‘totally inconsolable’ groom – who has not been identified but is said to be British – told staff at Terminal 5 that she had taken £5,000 that he gave her for the wedding.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told Metro.co.uk: ‘Officers were called to a check in area at Heathrow Airport on Thursday, 11 August, to a report that a quantity of cash and personal belongings had been stolen from a man.

‘Officers attended and spoke to the man.’

He added: ‘Enquiries continue.

‘No arrests have been made at this time.’

One onlooker explained to The Sun: ‘He was in bits — totally inconsolable. Apparently, they’d only met very recently and he’d fallen head-over-heels for her.

‘She did a runner while he went to the loo and vanished with all their belongings.

‘Staff looked everywhere for her, but she was nowhere to be found.’

They continued: ‘It wasn’t even clear if she’d gone out of the airport or on to another country.

‘In the end, the police were called. Even her name was in doubt by then.’
