Graham Smith told Express.co.uk that Prince William has bought into the “nonsense” of the monarchy and is prepared to wait 20 or 30 years to become King. Republic campaigns for Queen Elizabeth II to be replaced by a democratic, elected head of state and the monarchy to be abolished.
Mr Smith said: “Ultimately, Queen Elizabeth II should be the last monarch.
“This whole notion that this guy [Prince William] is going to do very little for the next 20 or 30 years and then become our head of state is nonsense.
“I think that increasing numbers of people will see it as nonsense.
“He has an opportunity to come out and say ‘maybe there should be a vote to decide who replaces my grandmother’.
“But he is not going to do that because he has bought into the whole nonsense of the monarchy.”
The Republic CEO also called for Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to give up their HRH titles.
He said: “I think Kate and William should renounce their royal titles.”
However, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams backed Prince William and Kate to successfully adjust to the role of King and Queen Consort when the time comes.

The royal commentator also stated that the current royal duties the couple undertake will prepare them to lead the Royal Family.
