Prince William hands out ‘Earthshot burgers’ in shock appearance
Prince William was spotted wading through the waters of New York City on Monday ahead of the 2023 Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit.
The future King visited Governors Island in New York Harbor to see the efforts of the Billion Oyster Project – an organisation seeking to rebuild oyster reefs that were once abundant in the waters.
The reefs are important for water filtration and protect against storm damage.
The Prince of Wales looked quite at home in the waters of the East River helping to collect oysters while wearing waders, an orange life jacket and yellow protective gloves.
He also met with schoolchildren who are studying marine biology and was seen chatting with many of the Billion Oyster Project’s employees.

During the visit, Prince William told reporters it was “so good to be back” in the US before he met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, with climate change firmly on the agenda during New York Climate Week and the 78th convening of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.
After their meeting, a UN spokesperson said the pair had “discussed efforts to enhance implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as financing for development”.
He arrived in the city on a commercial flight without his wife, Kate, Princess of Wales who will remain in the UK for the trip with the couple’s children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Arriving at Newark Airport he said: “It’s so good to be back in the United States. No one does optimism and ingenuity like the American people, so it’s only right we unveil this year’s Earthshot finalists in New York City.
“80 years ago, the world came together in this great city to find a new way, through the UN, to solve our shared challenges.

“I know our generation can take the bold action we need to make changes towards a healthy and sustainable world. The challenge may feel huge, but as John F Kennedy taught us, we rise to the challenge not because it is easy, but because it is hard. And vital.”
Tonight, Prince of Wales is scheduled to announce finalists at the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit – the award he founded to find ways to address problems created by climate change.
Eartshot was founded in 2020 – and every year between 2021 and 2030 an awards ceremony will honour winners in five categories who are using innovative methods to tackle climate and environmental issues.
The £1million prize given to each winner can be used to scale and support their work. This is Prince William’s first visit to New York City since 2014 – the Prince was due to visit last year but the visit was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
