Woman arrested for child neglect after girl, 8, falls to death from tower block

An eight-year-old girl has tragically died after falling from the balcony of a tower block in Portsmouth.

The child fell from a high rise apartment building in Wingfield Street on Thursday evening.

Emergency services rushed to her aid at around 6.50pm but she could not be saved.

Her family has been informed and an area has been taped off by police outside Pickwick House.

A 43-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of neglect of a child following the fatal incident. She remains in custody.

It’s not yet known which floor the youngster fell from – the building has 11 levels.

Hampshire Police’s full statement said: ‘We were called at 6.50pm on Thursday to reports of a child having fallen from a balcony on Wingfield Street, Portsmouth.

‘We attended along with our colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service who treated the eight-year-old girl, who subsequently died. Her family has been informed.

‘Officers will be in the area throughout the day to conduct enquiries. 

‘Anyone with any concerns can speak to our Neighbourhood Policing Teams that will be regularly patrolling. 

‘A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of neglect of a child and remains in custody at this time.’
