A woman has been killed in a car crash on the M1.
The victim, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene in Bedfordshire late on Christmas Eve.
Another person suffered minor injuries in what Highways England called a “serious collision” involving multiple vehicles.
It happened between junction 11a and junction 12 near Flitwick on the northbound lanes at around 11.15pm.
Debris could be seen strewn across both carriageways.
Police, firefighters and ambulance crews attended, closing a stretch of the motorway for nine hours until Christmas morning.
There was also an accident 10 miles further down the M1 on the opposite southbound lane in Hertfordshire, between Luton Airport and Dunstable.
Police are asking witnesses or anyone with information about the fatal crash to call 101 and quote Operation Granborough.
The M1 has now fully reopened in both directions.
