A woman who vanished in her early 20s has reappeared eight years later – and claims she was never missing.
Lisa Hu, 31, became estranged from her family and they reported her missing on December 8, 2015. She was last seen on the 900 block of 34th Street in Oakland, California.
At the time, Hu’s family said she was in good condition physically and mentally.
Hu contacted the Oakland Police Department and said she was never gone missing, KRON 4 reported.
She was taken off the missing persons list on Sunday afternoon after authorities found her and confirmed she was safe.
Police did not disclose where Hu was while she was considered missing. They only said that she was not hurt or being held against her will, according to CBS News. She was reunited with her mother.
The police department determined that foul play was not involved, according to the news outlet. They closed her case and removed posts online about her to respect her privacy.
Hu was found less than a month after Alicia Navarro, an 18-year-old who disappeared days before her 15th birthday, walked into a Montana police station more than 1,000 miles from her Arizona home to take herself off the missing persons list.
Like Hu, Alicia was reunited with her mother and said she was not harmed while she disappeared from the public eye. Alicia’s mysterious case made national headlines as a man was reportedly arrested at an apartment near the police station, with witnesses saying they saw a girl resembling her emerging from the same room.
As interest around Alicia’s case continued in late July, her mother Jessica Nunez posted an emotional video on Facebook begging for ‘no more TikToks, no more reaching out to Alicia or to me with your speculation or questions or assumptions’. Nunez thanked the public for helping in efforts to find Alicia but asked for privacy.
California has the highest rate of missing persons in the US, at 2,133 individuals, according to Wisevoter.
