The extortion and fraud charges that Michael Avenatti is facing has the celebrity lawyer shaking in his suit — admitting in his first interview since being arrested that he’s both “nervous” and “scared” — even though he insists that he’s innocent.
“Of course I’m nervous,” Avenatti told CBS. “I’m concerned. I’m scared. I feel terrible for my family. I feel bad for my friends…I’m all of those things and if I wasn’t, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense.”
Avenatti is facing a maximum of 50 years in prison for allegedly attempting to extort Nike for millions of dollars. He was arrested Monday and charged in New York.
Avenatti is also accused of committing wire and bank fraud in California.
“Most people are sticking by me. They believe in me,” Avenatti said. “They know what I’m all about. So I’ve been very fortunate in that regard. But sure, I’m nervous. I’m scared.”
The high-profile attorney is out on bond for the charges that were filed against him in New York and is expected to appear in court in California next week on the fraud charges. His interview with CBS is set to air on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
