European Economics Preview: Italy Retail Sales Data Due

Retail sales data from Italy is due on Monday, headlining a light day for the European economic news.

At 2.00 am ET, Statistics Norway publishes consumer and producer prices for June. Consumer price inflation is forecast to rise to 5.9 percent from 5.7 percent in May.

In the meantime, foreign trade from Romania and consumer prices from Lithuania are due.

At 3.00 am ET, the Czech Statistical Office releases retail sales for May. Economists forecast sales to fall 1.5 percent annually, reversing April’s 5.0 percent increase.

At 5.00 am ET, the Hellenic Statistical Authority releases Greece retail sales, industrial production and producer prices data.

Madison Dearborn Partners To Acquire Majority Stake In Unison From Carlyle

Unison, a leading provider of procurement, supply chain, and contract management software to U.S. federal government agencies and government contractors, announced Tuesday that it will receive a strategic majority investment from funds affiliated with private equity investment firm Madison Dearborn Partners, LLC.

As part of the transaction, funds managed by global investment firm Carlyle Group (CG) will sell its majority stake to MDP, while remaining a strategic partner as a minority investor. MDP joins existing investors, Carlyle and Unison management, to provide additional resources and industry expertise to Unison. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The transaction is anticipated to close in the third quarter of 2022. Upon closing, funds associated with MDP will own a controlling stake in Unison, while Carlyle will retain a significant minority equity position.

Unison’s management team will continue to serve in their current roles and members of Unison leadership will maintain a significant portion of their investment in Unison.

25% Rise In US Covid Casualties In A Fortnight

Deaths due to coronavirus infection in the United States have increased by 25 percent in the last two weeks, New York Times’ latest tally shows.

Cases have risen by 10 percent in the same period.

There is also a corresponding uptick in Covid hospitalizations.

Nearly 34000 people are currently in American hospitals with the coronavirus, an increase of 12 percent over the last two weeks. More than 3,700 of these patients are admitted in intensive care units, marking 11 percent rise in a fortnight.

With 43028 new cases reporting on Monday, the total has risen to 87,889,104, as per Johns Hopkins University’s latest data.

67 Covid deaths took the total U.S. Covid casualties to 1,017,939

California reported the most number of cases – 15,316 – and deaths – 19.

85,286,101 people have so far recovered from the disease, the Worldometer tally shows.

1053 additional deaths were reported globally on Monday, taking the total number of people who lost their lives due to the pandemic so far to 6,340,167.

Pedestrian killed in suspected hit-and-run at Colfax and Quebec in Denver

A pedestrian was killed at Colfax Avenue and Quebec Street on Monday night in what is believed to have been a hit-and-run, according to Denver police.

The crash, the police department wrote in a tweet, involved a motorist and pedestrian at the intersection.

An adult male was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Traffic was being diverted at first but around 1:42 a.m. Tuesday traffic on Colfax reopened.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, so not much else is known at this time.

The retailer, known for its posh wellies, hired KPMG to help boost profits and shore up its balance sheet.

Reports said bosses were considering raising fresh capital. Joules said in May that boss Nick Jones would step down in the first half of its next financial year while warning of the impact on profits of the cost-of-living crisis.

Its share price has plummeted by more than 80 percent in the year to date.

Joules said: “The group continues to focus on improving profitability, cash generation and liquidity headroom.”
