John Legend has released a video for his new single “Preach” that addresses social issues affecting marginalized communities.
“I can’t sit and hope. I can’t just sit and pray that. I can find a love when all I see is pain. I’m falling to my knees. And though I do believe. I can’t just preach, baby, preach. Wo-oah-oah-oah-oah, oh-oh-oh. I can’t just preach, baby, preach,” Legend sings in the new song.
“Preach” was produced by Greg Kurstin, while the video is directed by Dominique DeLeon.
The video opens with Legend and Chrissy Teigen asleep in bed. Legend then wakes up and walks into a high school gymnasium to find kids fleeing an apparent shooter. The video also takes on police brutality, immigration, and many other issues.
“The idea behind the song is that sometimes we can get so frustrated by the news and what’s going on and there’s this scatter going on in ourselves,” Legend said in a press release. “Do we become apathetic? Do we become engaged? Do we just talk about it, or do we do something?”
Legend’s most recent studio album was his 2016 release Darkness and Light, which featured the singles “Love Me Now” and “Penthouse Floor” featuring Chance the Rapper.
