An Indiana mom faces charges after she went missing with her infant daughter who was later found dead, according to officials.
Rachel McAfee, 36, was struggling with postpartum depression and alcoholism when she disappeared Monday with Emma, her 3-month-old daughter, from their home in Indianapolis, news station WXIN reported.
McAfee’s family said she left her home around 7 a.m. to drop the baby off with relatives then go to work for a meeting. When she didn’t show, her husband filed a missing persons report, according to WXIN.
A neighbor spotted McAfee’s vehicle Tuesday afternoon and notified authorities, officials said.
Responding medics arrived at the scene and found the 3-month-old dead inside the vehicle. The mom was suffering from “cold-related injuries” and brought to a local hospital, where she remained Wednesday night, according to the Indianapolis Star.
No cause of death was released for the baby, but officials ordered an autopsy.
McAfee’s husband said she was suffering from mental health issues when she disappeared with their daughter.
“She’s drank since I’ve known her, but it’s gotten out of control the last couple of years,” John McAfee told WXIN. “That’s kind of when all this started spiraling.”
