Supreme Court Will Hear California Union-Organizing Case

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider whether California is violating the constitutional rights of agricultural employers with a regulation that requires them to let union organizers onto company property for part of the year.

The justices said they will hear an appeal from two fruit companies that say the access requirements amount to a physical taking of private property without compensation in violation of the Fifth Amendment.

The Supreme Court has restricted union rights in recent years, most notably with a 2018ruling that said government employees have a constitutional right not to pay fees that support the costs of collective bargaining.

The case is Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid,20-107.

Dan Rather Schools Trump On Reelection Chances With Only 3 Words

Veteran newsman Dan Rather attempted to explain to President Donald Trump the current state of his reelection bid on Thursday night via Twitter.

Journalistic wordsmith that he is, Rather was able to get to the heart of the matter in only three words.

Joe Biden was projected the winner of the presidential election on Nov. 7 by The Associated Press and other media outlets, but Trump and some of his allies have repeatedly claimed he won the election without evidence.

The president has also accused the Democratic Party of “wrongdoing” without providing evidence to back the allegations.

Still, many Twitter users appreciated Rather’s attempt to explain the situation using words the president would surely understand.

But one Twitter user suspected Trump won’t listen to Rather’s pointed explanation of the facts.

As coronavirus cases surge, elected officials resist restrictions

With the coronavirus coming back with a vengeance across the country and the U.S. facing a long, dark winter, many governors and other elected officials are showing little appetite for imposing the kind of lockdowns and large-scale business closings seen last spring.

Some also continue to resist issuing statewide mask rules.

Among the reasons given: public fatigue, fear of doing more damage to already-crippled businesses, lack of support from Washington, and the way efforts to tame the virus have become fiercely politicized.

Trump Hints at His Election Loss But Still Withholds Concession to Biden

President Donald Trump suggested for the first time since Election Day that he may not have won another term but stopped short of conceding the race to Joe Biden.

Speaking in the White House Rose Garden on Friday about coronavirus vaccines, Trump vowed his administration would not “lock down” the country again but said another president could.

“This administration will not be going to a lockdown. Hopefully, the — whatever happens in the future, who knows which administration it will be, I guess time will tell, but I can tell you this administration will not go to a lockdown,” he said.

Trump, who didn’t take reporters’ questions, suffered a series of major setbacks earlier Friday in his bid to overturn Biden’s victory. News networks called Georgia for the Democrat and legal challenges for Trump crumbled in three other key states.

Taken together, the developments on Friday significantly narrowed Trump’s options to swing the race back in his favor. While the president has repeatedly argued the election results have been tainted by widespread fraud, his legal teams have failed to produce evidence of that, and federal and state officials have called the contest the most secure in the nation’s history.
