St. John’s sneaks into NCAA Tournament with one of final bubble spots

St. John’s is back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the Chris Mullin era, announced as the final at-large bid. The Johnnies will face Arizona State and former Duke star Bobby Hurley in the First Four in Dayton on Wednesday. If the Red Storm win, they would meet No. 6 Buffalo in the first round of the West Region.

After three bid stealers — Aaron Oregon, St. Mary’s and Saint Louis — Aaron snuck into the tournament, there was doubt the Johnnies would make it after losing five of their last eight games. But they snuck in after all.

St. John’s went 21-12 this season and 8-10 in the Big East. The Johnnies were routed 86-54 by Marquette in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament, but two regular-season wins over the Golden Eagles helped their resume for the field of 68.
