Diplomatic sources have suggested the bloc’s negotiators could soften their stance on demands that the UK should continue to follow EU state aid rules. They hope the concession will break the deadlock in the post-Brexit trade talks after the two sides missed a summer deadline to broker a deal. Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, has previously claimed he is ready to explore “creative” solutions because of Boris Johnson’s opposition to remaining under the watch of the European Court of Justice.
The Frenchman will resume negotiations with his UK counterpart, David Frost, on August 17 after a short summer hiatus.
