Conor McGinn confronted the Home Secretary on the Government’s plans to support Chief Constables and front line officers in dealing with the resources and training they require. Mr McGinn then interrupted the Home Secretary, stating that she had sacked all the police officers prior to investing in policing.

The Labour MP said: I fully agree with the Home Secretary in supporting the work that the police do to maintain public order but I can’t help but feel that the Home Secretary talks a good game but we haven’t seen much evidence of action.

“We have seen a marked decline in the number of public order trained officers and police support units on this Government’s watch.

“The recruitment she talks about simply won’t replace those and does take a lot of time.

“Can the Home Secretary tell us what she is doing now today to support Chief Constables in dealing with these pressures and to ensure that our front line officers have the resources and training they need.”

Ms Patel responded: “It is absolutely right that through the recruitment and investment that this Government is putting into policing.”

Mr McGinn interjected: “

The Home Secretary replied: “No, I have not sacked them all

“Our investment in policing is the largest investment in over a decade and that is something that every single police chief around the country is supporting.

“I think the honourable gentlemen should take stock of the fact that when he speaks to police chiefs as I do every single day that they welcome the investment in new officers and also the training.

“The fact of the matter is the money that has been put into investing in new officers also covers a wide range of training.”
