Babysitter who ‘beat boy, 5, to death after he wet himself’ faces life in prison

A US babysitter who beat the child she was looking after to death after he allegedly wet himself is facing a lifetime behind bars.

Lauren Jeanette Courtney, 23, is understood to have agreed with US prosecutors that she will plead guilty to the killing of five-year-old Ryan James Peralto.

The Nevada woman faces the prospect of the life term after the child suffered a brain bleed and fractured skull in 2021.

Las Vegas CBS affiliate KLAS-TV reports that Courtney will make the guilty plea to a single count of first-degree murder and could gain parole after 20 years in a cage.

The charges brought against her have since been reduced in number – she was initially facing the murder charge alongside three counts of abuse or neglect causing substantial bodily or mental harm, four counts of child abuse or neglect, and one count of child endangerment.

Before her guilty plea, her trial date had initially been on October 17.

Ryan’s dad Kaiea Peralto reportedly received a call from Courtney telling him that his son had thrown up blood on March 11 2021.

Kaiea and his wife are understood to have been at work while Courtney looked after their son and his sister but had surveillance cameras installed in his home.

Kaiea installed the CCTV after his daughter,7, informed him that Courtney had been hurting his brother – the sitter was reportedly aware of them but was unphased.

Courtney was reportedly seen cleaning liquid off the floor, making the call to Kaiea 10 minutes later.

By the time Kaiea made it home, he found his little lad unresponsive.

He went through the tapes himself and later turned them over to authorities.

A police statement to KLAS read: “Officers were able to view video surveillance on an app from Kaiea’s phone.

“Officers observed (Courtney) pulling Ryan by one arm through the doorway of the bathroom. Lauren states ‘I know you are faking it.'

"(Courtney) is observed kicking Ryan in the face with her foot, punching his face, and slap his chest. (Courtney) then takes off Ryan’s underwear and drags him into the shower.”

The beating he then received is understood to have lasted two minutes, leaving the boy with head injuries and also “damage to his spleen, liver, pancreas and intestines”.

According toLaw&Crime, the spelling of Courtney's name has varied between Lauren and Laurren, with the former being used in court documents.
