The tremor and aftershock struck the Batan islands off the north of the Philippines on Saturday killing seven people and scores of others, according to local media.
An initial quake of magnitude 5.4 followed shortly by an aftershock of magnitude 5.9, according to the Philippine government data.
The first jolt killed five people and injured eight with the others being caught up in the aftershock, Ricardo Jalad, executive director of the disaster agency said.
He added some buildings partially collapsed in the tourist islands.
