A thief broke into a Birmingham charity shop and left a poo on the stockroom floor — and adding insult to injury, the shop was burgled again less than 48 hours later.

The Age UK shop in Bearwood Road, Bearwood, was first trashed on Tuesday with items dragged from shelves and drawers emptied onto the floor.

The raiders helped themselves to sweets, chocolate and an assortment of donated items as they ransacked the place before disgustingly defecating in a tub in the stockroom, Birmingham Live reports.

Less than 24 hours later, the shop was burgled again in a devastating double blow.

West Midlands Police is investigating both break-ins, with witnesses urged to come forward.

A spokesman for Age UK said: "Unfortunately Age UK's shop in Bearwood was broken into twice on March 16 and 17.

"Thankfully no-one was injured, however stock items were stolen and there was damage to the shop.

"Both incidents were promptly reported and are being investigated by the police.

"It's a terrible shame when incidents such as this occur.

"Age UK's shops help raise vital funds for the charity's work and services supporting older people, which have been a lifeline for older people during lockdown and throughout the coronavirus crisis.

"The lockdowns and temporary shop closures also mean that Age UK and our shops are in need now more than ever, so it's very upsetting that this has happened."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police added: "We responded to reports of a burglary at Age UK on Bearwood Road, Smethwick, on Tuesday. The offence is believed to have occurred over the last 48 hours prior to being reported to us.

"A window was smashed, the shop till opened, money taken out of the charity box and petty cash was stolen from the back of the shop.

"We were also called to a separate incident at the same location just before 5am on Wednesday, March 17, in which an offender threw a brick through a glass pane on the front door and entered the shop, but left the premises after being discovered.

"No property was stolen during this incident."
