The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office has identified the kayaker who fell into Cherry Creek Reservoir on Sunday.
Christopher Carmon, 26, of Aurora, died after his inflatable kayak capsized during a strong gust of wind around noon on Sunday. His body was recovered a few hours later at Cherry Creek State Park by the South Metro Fire Rescue Department, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials.
Carmon’s dog may have also drowned, as initial reports indicated the man had a dog with him in the kayak. Officials have not been able to confirm that there had been a dog in the vessel.
The water was choppy from the wind and dark, which made the rescue attempt a failure. The crews quickly turned into recovery which was successful.
Water temperatures were in the low 50s on Sunday and crews were searching in water depths ranging from 9-16 feet, CPW said.
Carmon was not wearing a life jacket.
