Fire crews battle huge blazes in the Amazon – after Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro denies they exist

FIRE crews fight blazes in the Amazon — after Brazil’s president said they don’t exist.

Every year huge swathes of the rainforest burn.

Experts say they are deliberately started by speculators clearing land for pasture.

Bricklayer Rosalino de Oliveira watched a firefighter tackled flames that came dangerously close to his clap-board home.

He said: "Every year I suffer from this. Nobody knows who does this. They come and burn everything and run away.

"We are poor. I can barely feed my family on my salary.

"The fire comes to destroy everything in a matter of seconds."

But president Jair Bolsonaro blamed the media for spreading “lies” about the fires.

Bolsonaro has dispatched the military to fight fires since May but experts question whether these deployments are working.
