Ground beef named source of E. coli outbreak that sickened 100 people

Ground beef is the source of an E. coli outbreak that sickened more than 100 people in six states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced.

People became ill after eating the bad beef at home and in restaurants, the agency said Friday. The contaminated food was not associated with any specific supplier or brand, according to the CDC, and no recall has been issued.

Since March 2, sickness stemming from E. coli has been reported in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. Seventeen patients were hospitalized with symptoms including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.

As part of its investigation, the CDC interviewed 84 people who said they became sick three to four days after eating ground beef.
