ISIS’ torture methods from severed heads, breast tongs and the flying carpet

ISIS-controlled territories in the Middle East are amongst the most dangerous places in the world with the militants using torture techniques so cruel they're barely believable.

Adhering to strict Sharia Law, people living under the so-called Islamic State can be thrown into prison for the most minor of crimes and the conditions inside are predictably barbaric.

Life in an ISIS jail cell is anything but cosy with punishments ranging from lashing, clamping, stretching and even beheadings.

In a horrific 2017 report from the International Centre for Violent Extremism, some of the group's inhumane practices were detailed for the first time.

The list of punishments and interrogation techniques was as exhaustive as it was inhumane.

The report named seven layers of physical punishment ISIS captives would endure during their time behind bars.

These included several stereotypical forms of (brutal) torture like lashing and electrocution.

However, the group also specialised in forms of psychological and endurance torture with practices such as the magic carpet, the fuel and the biter, reports Newsweek.

If a prisoner was tortured using the fuel, they would typically be doused in gasoline and tied to a chair.

They would then be told to answer questions under the threat of being lit on fire.

One survivor of the treatment described his ordeal in the report.

He said: "He brought a gallon jug and poured oil on me; from the chest down. He said confess or I will burn you.

"I thought he was trying to scare me. I did not know that he would do it. Next thing I remember was waking up in a hospital."

In the magic carpet, prisoners would find themselves placed on two hinged boards with their legs and arms tied behind their bodies causing excruciating pain to their spine. They would be left like this for hours.

For woman, the sick torturers would apply a technique called the biter in which large bear-like tongs would be applied to the breasts in order to cause maximum damage.

If none of these methods was fruitful, some evil torturers would even go as far as locking prisoners in tiny cages with severed heads.

In one shocking incident, a woman was locked in a cage with the severed body part which she soon realised belonged to her own brother.

A woman who was present at the time told the makers of the report how the tragic tale had unfolded.

She said: "The prisoner woke up and pushed herself to the end corner of the small cage, as far as she could from the head. She kept looking around and breathing heavily…She turned it towards her so she can see the face.

"Once she saw the face she started howling. She howled so loudly and for too long.

"They came the next day and took the head away.

"One of the hisbah women told us that the head belongs to the woman's infidel brother. The woman did not eat or speak a word for two days after."
