A man allegedly stabbed a woman and her dog to death in a broad daylight attack – before he was knocked out with a rock.
Ricardo Saldivar, 23, initially targeted the animal near a park in San Dimas, California, the US, foreign media reports.
Its owner, 66-year-old Jeanne Ann Edgar, tried to intervene and was then stabbed, according to police.
Saldivar was eventually subdued after a bystander, identified only as Joe, picked up a rock and threw it at him.
He told NBC Los Angeles: "I see in my peripheral vision, this guy – he looks like he’s deranged and on drugs.
"He approaches me, and he says something along the lines of 'I’m going to kill you.'"
Saldivar then allegedly took out a knife before attacking Jeanne and her dog.
Joe then grabbed a rock, adding: "I threw it as hard as I could and it hit him and he fell over.
“And at that point, I see a bunch of neighbours everywhere – people yelling. It was a horrific scene."

The woman and the dog were both pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple stab wounds.
Saldivar was taken to hospital and treated for head injuries.
He will be taken to the San Dimas police station and detained on suspicion of murder and attempted murder once medically cleared.
Joe’s step dad Tony Page told KABC: “Joe was sitting in his vehicle, watching this horrific thing take place.
“The suspect at that point turned after killing the dog and started stabbing the lady.
“At that point Joe got out of his vehicle, looked for something.
“He found a rock, picked it up, he threw it, hit the suspect in the face, knocked him out.
“He was able to basically subdue and hold the suspect until authorities arrived.”
