A man who was spotted selling eggs for £10 each next to the new controversial Margaret Thatcher statue and pushed on by police claims he went with the intention of getting "filthy rich".

Oli Dougmore, journalist at, decided to set up an egg stall next to the newly erected statue of the "Iron Lady" hoping to "meet the recent demand" of eggs and sell one for £10 a pop.

The Grantham based statue, which has been the target of egging since it was unveiled, was most recently attacked by a member of staff from Leicester University, it is alleged.

Despite getting a lot of mixed attention from locals and passers-by, with one driver apparently slamming him as a "f**king loser", Oli admitted to the Daily Star that he didn't manage to sell a single egg.

"Maybe my price point was too high," he told us.

"But to be honest, in a few months time with the state of our economy I think some people will look back on that and wish they got in on the action."

Oli said the alleged egging of the statue by a staff member at Leicester University was the inspiration for his business idea as there was "demand and no supply".

He said: "I thought, basically, there is a demand and a lack of supply. There is an opportunity here.

"If this guy is turning up and egging a statue and there's no one nearby selling eggs – we could turn over a healthy profit.

"But maybe my calculations were wrong, maybe it was the police, or maybe it was a hint of Brussels and the EU.

"Maybe it was the nanny state stifling the spirt of the entrepreneur."

The quick-thinking business move truly was stifled by the police in just 20 minutes – who told Oli that he would be aiding and assisting criminal damage if one of his eggs did hit something.

PCSO Patrick, who was photographed moving Oli along, tweeted that he had a "call to possible egg throwing at the Margaret Thatcher statue".

He has been contacted for further comment.

Oli Dougmore and his team at will be releasing a video about their escapades at the Iron Lady's Grantham statue – delving into the topics of Thatcherism and culture war around statues in a "tongue and cheek way".

"You don't have to be boring or dry to get into these topics," he said.
