A man who fired shots at moving vehicles in Adams County in an unprovoked road rage incident was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison.
Theodore Hrdlicka, 51, following a Sept. 8 guilty plea to attempted murder, according to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office.
On Aug. 5, 2019, Hrdlicka, along with his wife, Courtney Hrdlicka, who was driving, pulled beside a vehicle from out of state with a grandfather, his son, and a grandson, on U.S. 36, according to a news release. The family was going on a camping trip.
Hrdlicka brandished a gun from the passenger window and fired several shots, the release said. One bullet came close to striking the young boy, who was hit with metal fragments from the bullets that struck the moving vehicle.
The Hrdlickas drove off as he kept firing and two other vehicles were hit by gunfire in the incident. The couple were later arrested at an Adams County residence.
“The actions of this defendant are appalling and unfathomable,” said District Attorney Brian Mason, in the release. “These innocent victims were going on a family camping trip when Mr. Hrdlicka inexplicably started shooting at a little boy, his father, and his grandfather. I’m grateful we were able to achieve justice in this case.”
Investigators determined that the Hrdlickas allegedly committed an identical series of crimes in Arapahoe County shortly before the Adams County incident. Earlier this year, Courtney Hrdlicka pleaded guilty to accessory to a crime in Adams County and to first-degree assault with a deadly weapon in Arapahoe County. She’s been sentenced to ten years in prison.
Theodore Hrdlicka’s case in Arapahoe County is pending. His Adams County conviction includes a sentence enhancer for violent crime, use of a weapon.
