Masked man tries to snatch girl, 2, from pram in front of horrified mum

A masked man tried to snatch a two-year-old girl from her pram while she was out on a walk with her mum, with police now appealing for information.

The young mum was out for a walk near Eastrop Park in Basingstoke, Hampshire, on Friday, February 5, when a stranger came up to her around 4pm.

He then began speaking to her before trying to take the child out of the pushchair, police say.

Hampshire Police have put out an appeal for any witnesses who may have seen the incident to come forward.

The force said: “Officers investigating this incident are keen to speak with anyone who could have information.

“Were you in the area at the time, perhaps you saw or heard something? Do you recognise the man in this description?”

The man is described as around 40 years old, black, about 5ft 6ins tall with black hair, a thick beard and moustache, and a stocky build.

He was also wearing a white mask.

Eastrop Park is a public park with a boating lake, walking trails, a café, and play areas for children.

CharityAction Against Abductionrecorded more than 1200 child abduction offences between 2018 and 2019, an increase of 7% from the previous year.

A report by the charity based on figures from 2011 and 2012 found that 43% per cent of abduction offences were attempted by complete strangers.
