McDonald’s horror as gran bins entire dinner when she sees ‘horrendous’ kitchen

A mum-of-four threw away her £14 McDonald’s order after noticing the “horrendous” state of the takeaway’s kitchen.

"It was horrible,” says Ceri Pepper. “It wasn't just one or two bits on the floor that could be picked up – it was horrendous.

"The floor was dirty. It's not just walked-in food – it's walked-in dirt.”

She says that the staff seemed "oblivious" to the mess.

To make matters worse, when the 61-year-old uploaded her photos of the chaotic conditions of the burger giant’s Crossways Parc branch in Caerphilly, Wales, a member of the McDonald’s social media team thanked her for the "compliment".

Ceri says that she saw smears of sauces and other spills on numerous work surfaces and nuggets, chips and lettuce strewn across the kitchen and serving area.

After complaining about the filthy conditions, Ceri says she was told that the staff were “too busy” to clean.

Ceri had already paid for £14 for three triple cheeseburgers, two fries and two McFlurrys, but says she binned the food as she left because she “didn't want to take the risk”.

She described how one McDonald’s staff member was "holding up the toffee sauce bottle with two fingers for my McFlurry because the bottle was encrusted in sauce and she couldn't hold it properly because it was so sticky.

"I looked at the rest of the area,” Ceri added, “and thought 'oh my goodness'. The general eating area was like that too.

"All the orders were piled up. They weren't cleaning anything. It was just piling up and piling up.

"I should have just said can I have a refund but I just went outside and put all the food in the bin."

Ceri posted several photographs of the shocking conditions in the restaurant to social media, only for a representative to reply saying they “love to hear when our restaurants impress with their cleanliness” and promised to “pass on her compliments”.

A McDonald’s spokesperson told the Daily Star: “Hygiene and cleanliness is of the utmost importance to us and we apologise to the customer for her experience.

"This was an exceptionally busy time for the restaurant," the spokesperson added, "and as soon as the issue was brought to the attention of our franchisee the restaurant operated Drive-Thru only, to allow for extra cleaning to take place.”

Nevertheless, Ceri also complained to her local Environmental Health authority.

A spokesman for Caerphilly Council confirmed that they are dealing with a complaint about the premises and have requested remedial actions to be undertaken by the restaurant.

A follow up visit is scheduled for today.
