US President Donald Trump’s campaign hit out at House Speaker Pelosi for “fear-mongering” by suggesting Trump would try to stay in office if he loses, according to Fox News. The insinuation has been labelled “ridiculous” by Trump’s 2020 communications director. Tim Murtaugh added Ms Pelosi “might want to check in with Hillary Clinton and other Democrats who actually did lose”.
Mr Murtaugh said in a statement: “That’s ridiculous and nothing more than warrantless fear mongering to rile up her fringe base and the media.
“Pelosi might want to check in with Hillary Clinton and other Democrats who actually did lose, but still won’t accept the will of the voters in the presidential election of 2016 and governors races in Florida and Georgia in 2018.
“There’s where the real denial is.”
Ms Pelosi had previously told The New York Times Trump might not step down if defeated.
She told the paper: “We have to inoculate against that, we have to be prepared for that.”
Her comments echoed support for the Democrats as she told them to “wing big, so Trump can’t challenge the results”.
Ms Pelosi added she does not believe Trump can be removed through impeachment.
House Speaker Pelosi accused Trump of trying to “goad Democrats into impeaching him” while at an event in New York City.
She said: “Everyday, Trump is obstructing justice by saying this one shouldn’t testify, that one shouldn’t testify and the rest.
“Trump is goading us to impeach him. That’s what he’s doing, every single day, he’s just like taunting taunting, because he knows that it would be very divisive in the country.
“He’s making a case. He’s just trying to goad us into impeachment and wherever you go.
“I say to my colleagues, wherever it is, be ready. And whatever it is, we’ll be ready. We owe that as a precedent for the future.”
